Introducing T for Tutu
Updated: 2 days ago
“Like star dust glistening on fairy wings, little girls’ dreams are made of magical things.”
Every little girl dreams of being a Princess, and when better to make that wish come true than when they are a part of your special day!
T for Tutu will work with you to create and design the perfect bespoke Tutu Dresses or accessories for your celebration, that can match your older Bridesmaids dresses or the colour theme of the Wedding.
Each Dress is handmade by Ruth, so each one is unique to your little Bridesmaid!
If that doesn’t make her a Princess, I don’t know what will!
Tell me about your Business and how and when you started T for Tutu
Up until fairly recently I worked as a primary teacher, which I really loved, but with two young children of my own I decided to try to find something I could do to allow me a bit more family time.
We went to a family festival a few years ago which involved making costumes. I made tutus for my daughter and myself and T for Tutu sort of grew from there!
I started off making tutus and hair bands and then decided to expand into dresses. I think my old home economics teacher would be shocked to see me using a sewing machine, I was hopeless at school! But crafting has got me through some tough times and I love seeing happy faces at the end of a make.
How did you learn your craft/skill & How does the design process work?
I’m pretty much self-taught and have learned a lot through experimenting with different fabrics. I love the way tulle instantly makes you look like you’re in a fairytale!
I also love creating new designs and much prefer making something a little different each time.
I like to start by chatting to the couple and finding out a bit about the personality of their wedding. It helps to know a bit about the flower child too! Once we have come up with the colours and styles I will get to work and make a rough sketch.
If I think something will look good or add to the dress I will send pictures as I make to check with the couple. Once the dress is finished and approved, I will package it up to post out or of course it can be collected.
The whole process usually takes about two to three weeks depending on how many orders I have in.
Tell us about your studio/workspace? Can couples visit you?
At the moment I am working from a tiny box room in my house but if T for Tutu takes off I have my eye on a garden workshop!
Appointments are currently held via Skype, or face to face if local to me.
What do you love most about working in or designing products for the wedding industry?
I absolutely love weddings and being part of that special time in someone’s life is such a privilege. You can’t help loving it really because everyone you meet is so excited and happy that it tends to rub off!
Who would be your dream client? Dream collaboration?
My dream client would be someone who loves something a little different, a bit quirky. I’d love to work on a rainbow themed wedding!
I had the privilege to work with a great group of Wedding professionals to create a fairytale wedding at a festival recently and that was just so much fun.
I love collaborations so you can bounce ideas of each other.
